Abstract

The present article presents an overview of studies and publications on qualitative research starting in the 1920s and 1930s and advancing through the 1970s and 1980s. It emphasizes the existing research paradigm in mathematics education, particularly the dominant belief that the acquisition and comprehension of Mathematics were grounded in psychological principles. It further indicates the moment when the focus changed from the acquisition of mathematics to the learner engaged in mathematics, aligned with the discussion regarding the conceptualization of science and mathematics itself. It analyzes published literature widely circulated among mathematics education scholars. Ultimately, this article underscores the significance of language within the qualitative approach, elucidating is rationale in philosophical terms.
