Participant observation, workshops and semi-structured interviews: participatoryresearch with young people from the countrysideof Pernambuco, Brazil

The article addresses the participatory method in researching with youth from rural quilombola communities and from the urban outskirtin the countryside of Pernambuco, Brazil. We observe the contributions of this method to understand the oppression and the inequalities experienced by these young people and the forms of resistance they have built. Participatory research has been built through several instruments and techniques that enable the construction of information. We used three methods: participant observation, which helped tounderstand the context of the young people, an important stage to support the construction of the second stage; workshops, moments when it was possible to build reflections with the young people; the semi-structured interviews, which allowed us to deepen some of the themes discussed in the workshops. We emphasize the importance of research that allow the participants to talk about their experiences and to reflect on them in order to strengthen resistance practices.
