Abstract

Purpose has gained increasing attention in both the scientific community and the educational field, particularly within the context of Brazilian education. This study aims to explore the purpose of undergraduate students at a public university. The sample consisted of 261 participants who responded to three open-ended questions from the Stanford Purpose Assessment, addressing a personally significant goal, their main reason for pursuing it, and the actions taken toward its achievement. The responses were subjected to textual analysis using the IRaMuTeQ software. The results revealed that students focused primarily on goals related to financial stability, securing employment and/or starting a family, and improving their quality of life. The majority of participants identified studying as the main strategy for achieving their goals. The results also revealed differences in goals and motivations across gender and academic programs, underscoring the diversity of student perspectives.
