This study aimed to map the main actors involved in the discussion about the manipulation of "scientific images". For that, the methodology used included exploratory analysis, bibliographic survey and data extraction. The results indicate that editors/journals and educational/research institutions are the main key players in this scenario and that most of the articles were produced by North American researchers, with the guidelines proposed by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) being the most mentioned. It was observed that, despite the efforts employed, fraudulent image manipulation has been facilitated by the continuous evolution and easy access to new image editing and fabrication tools. In this context, new ethical and technological problems arise, whose confrontation depends, fundamentally, on the mutual collaboration of the actors involved in the scientific publication process, mainly, in the creation of clear guidelines for authors and in the development of new methods and tools for inspection and monitoring of questionable images.
