Abstract

This qualitative case study examined the use of the AbductivAI model, focusing on the “data analysis” category in 20 doctoral theses defended between 2018 and 2023, highlighting the model's challenges and potential. AbductivAI is structured around an eight-phase chain of thought that enables human–AI collaboration for qualitative data analysis, using a codebook, with a human researcher working in webQDA and an AI agent integrated into Gemini Pro2.5 . The main challenges are related to generative AI literacy, detailed documentation of interactions, and continuous human oversight throughout all stages. The model’s potential lies in its capacity for robust dataset analysis, human–AI collaboration, iterative interactions, and transparency in the analytical process. We conclude that AbductivAI is an innovative framework with outstanding potential for qualitative research, offering transparency and enhanced analytical quality.
