Aging is associated with mobility restrictions, often leading elderly people to use mobility aids. Little research has explored the environmental, social, and individual factors that influence the choice of these devices. This study aims to understand the perceptions and experiences of elderly men and women regarding mobility issues and their choices to improve mobility. To this end, we used a qualitative, descriptive, and interpretative approach with a face-to-face focus group. This group consisted of five men and five women aged between 65 and 96, living in a long-term care facility for the elderly. The study highlighted how cultural and social factors influence the choice of walking sticks, crutches, and wheelchairs to aid mobility. The variety of contexts underlines the need for personalized solutions, whereas negative rhetoric towards aging can perpetuate stigma. Thus, public policies should be revised to better assist the elderly.
