Abstract

The article investigates how communism is associated with the devil in contemporary Brazilian evangelicalism. Based on ethnographic observations in a Presbyterian congregation during the 2018 elections, it analyzes how political categories such as “communist” and “leftist” take on functions similar to theological terms like “heretic.” The study discusses the role of the devil as a symbol that shapes moral and spiritual boundaries, defining the “us” of believers against the “other” of the world. It also examines universities as perceived threats to Christian faith, exposing tensions between religion and secular knowledge. The article concludes that communism is constructed not only as a political ideology but also as a spiritual and eschatological threat, reinforcing a belligerent ethos within Brazilian evangelical experience.
