Sexual violence in children and youth: refletions about care in the light of symbolic interactionism

This theoretical study aims to examine the care provided to child and adolescent victims of sexual violence through the lens of Symbolic Interactionism. According to researchers, meanings are imposed on social objects by the individual’s previous experience and symbolic references, consequently, children and adolescents may not recognize themselves as victims. It is from interpreting and determining meaning to acts of violence that adults realize the need for care. Such care is implemented through communication and the application of knowledge, which are shaped by situational, structural, and individual factors, as well as other societal subjectivities. Given the social roles of each individual, sexual violence is a phenomenon that often induces despair, disorganization, and destruction, within the context of care, however it may also function as a catalyst for the deconstruction of limiting perspectives. By acknowledging these symbolic dimensions, the internal reconstruction experienced by both caregivers and those receiving care contributes to preserving aspects of childhood and adolescence in the lives of victims.
